Reviews From AMAZON.COM
a good choice for beginning C++
Although the author of this book intended it for programmers experienced with a language other than C++, this book does give sufficient instruction for a beginner(I should say an advanced beginner who has already had fustrating failed attempts to learn programming from other beginners programming books). The book succeeds very well in this respect of really explaining how syntax features are applied in real working situations instead of just steadily feading you with explainations of syntax fuctionality. However just learning this information is not enough, you have put it into practice in order to learn, and thats where this books main fault is, that the exersizes are worthless. Basically the author asks you to modify the example code in the book to do different things, like change from a ascending to decending print out, having the program ask for and make slightly different calcualtions, etc. Thats all the exersizes are, just suggestions to alter code, with no definate solutions. Simply changing code to do different things is not a way a to learn. If I was able to alter someones source code after reading a few syntax descriptions, then I would already be an accomplished programmer wouldnt I? At the end of Ch4 the author suggests to read the first 4 chapters of his beginners C++ programming book "You Can Do It". I think that is worthwhile advice only for the better interactive code exersizes in that book. If youre really serious about learning C++, its worth getting both books.
