Book Description
Forward When I wrote the Foreword for Leon's second edition, PHP 4 had just started making it big, taking over the market share from PHP 3. The new version made great promises, and looking back it met all of its promises and more. We can see that at present PHP 4 has no doubt not only replaced almost all PHP 3 installations, but has conquered the Web application development market with its millions of installations and use in enterprise companies. Today, we are again facing exciting times. PHP 5 is about to be released, promising major improvements to the growing PHP community. As with previous versions, the major improvements are at the language level. Zeev and I redesigned the object model--at last dumping the problematic model, which originated from our work in PHP 3. Some of the other changes we made include: Treating objects as handles and not native types, allowing for other new features and fixing some odd behavior. Allowing for private, public, and protected access restrictions on members and methods. Introducing exception handling a la C++'s try/catch. Providing interfaces similar to the ones found in Java giving. And lots more... PHP 5 is also expected to feature improvements and additions in other areas, including better all-around XML support, improved streams support, and more. In the 3rd edition of Core PHP Programming, Leon has invited my partner Zeev Suraski to cover the PHP 5 language changes. No doubt that Leon's experience in writing PHP books and Zeev's superior knowledge of PHP 5 and its internals have led to a must-buy book for PHP developers. I hope you enjoy this book and that it accompanies you during the adoption phase of PHP 5. Andi Gutmans Herzelyia, Israel /p>

a welcome addition
Leon has done it again... given us a book that developers need and will use. I own a lot of books on PHP. But I ALWAYS refer back to Leon' first Core PHP book when in the midst of creating the perfect solution. FYI: I did not find enough reasons to buy the second edition, covering PHP v4.x. True, there is little on each database. As it should be... one only needs to know how to use PHP with their RDBMS of choice. Which this book does well. I have created world class solutions, secure, money making web sites, and Leon's efforts have made it easier for me to get more done in less time. As one reviewer pointed out, this book may not be for everyone. As programmer of "C", Delphi/Pascal, Perl and tons of cgi-bin scripting, his approach is perfect for me.
The quality doesn't match the bulk.
Given the esteem with which the authors are held, one might expect a much better piece of work than this effort. The volume is huge, the coverage of topics much too broad, to warrant the name Core PHP Programming.XML and Generating Graphics are certainly not a core piece of any programming language. Core means syntax, grammar, concepts and the indispensable basics. A mere 100 pages covers eight (8) different databases. There are more than one thousand (1000+) pages in the book ! Database connectivity and processing is probably the single largest application of PHP. You won't learnd much here. The coverage of XML, for example, is similarly shallow. This is certainly not suitable as a textbook. A sad performance by two very important people in the PHP community. From him to whom is given, much is asked. Caveat Emptor.
